The most hopeful day
Happy Winter Solstice — always, to me, the most hopeful day of the year.
"Solstice": from the Latin sol (sun) & sistere (to stand still).
The shortest daylight, the longest night, the Sun describing its lowest arc across the sky, the northern Pole at its maximum tilt away from the Sun.
But we made it — and the year's light-tide turns here.
Birdsong busy and bright outside in the beeches this morning.
