Public philosophy

Since the millennium, there has been a huge increase in the visibility of philosophy, both online and off. There are, of course, books on philosophy, but also numerous popular live events, courses, podcasts, television and radio programmes, and newspaper columns. Philosophy today is as likely to be found on YouTube as it is in a bookshop or library. Just to mention a few examples of freely accessible online public philosophy initiatives: Michael Sandel's 'Justice' course, the BBC's History of Ideas animations, or the many popular philosophy podcasts, including History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps from Peter Adamson, Philosophy Bites from David Edmonds and Nigel Warburton, and the philosophy episodes of the BBC Radio 4 series In Our Time. This complex and heterogeneous phenomenon is generally called 'public philosophy'. I have often pondered why things used to be one way and how and why they ever changed. If people really did one time carry open, casual dialogue in public about philosophical ideas and deep reflections on their lives, why would they ever stop?
Wars I guess.
Although today we live in the most advanced society in history with every feature you could think of and can't think of, assisting us in a way that allows us to live in huge cities with safety and bliss to evils of the past, we care nothing for exchanging smiles and conversation with the people the surround us in our present, immediate small moments.

Smart phones have ironically tuned us out of the real world because the whole world is literally in our pockets or hands at any given time.

Something like that, anyway. There's a lot of things that contribute to our lack of involvement or care in communities. Any more ideas?
