If people really did one time carry open, casual dialogue in public about philosophical ideas and deep reflections on their lives, why would they ever stop?
Wars I guess.
Although today we live in the most advanced society in history with every feature you could think of and can't think of, assisting us in a way that allows us to live in huge cities with safety and bliss to evils of the past, we care nothing for exchanging smiles and conversation with the people the surround us in our present, immediate small moments.

Smart phones have ironically tuned us out of the real world because the whole world is literally in our pockets or hands at any given time.

Something like that, anyway. There's a lot of things that contribute to our lack of involvement or care in communities. Any more ideas? During an interview on BBC Radio 2, British astronomer Patrick Moore announced that a very rare planetary event was about to take place—that Jupiter and Pluto would soon align in relation to Earth, and their combined gravitational pull would momentarily override Earth's own gravity and make people weigh less. He called it the Jovian-Plutonian Gravitational Effect, and said that if people jumped in the air at exactly 9:47 a.m., they would experience a floating sensation. Moore signaled, "Jump now!" over the airwaves, and within minutes the BBC switchboard was flooded with calls from people who claimed it had worked. -Writer's Almanac

http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org/index.php?date=2013/04/01Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02115141650963300011noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5634493651432799061.post-6899002678876690972013-03-04T13:05:32.110-06:002013-03-04T13:05:32.110-06:00I went to website and signed the petition (my husb...I went to website and signed the petition (my husband and I both signed)
because I forgot to sign it in class. Pragmatists like James and Dewey think of knowledge, even consciousness itself, as a practical response to more-or-less urgent needs foisted upon us by life and our various environmental challenges. "Control" may be problematic and illusory, but understanding and (in the late Richard Rorty's preferred terminology) "coping" seem nothing less than what we need to do in order to survive and flourish in tandem with the planet that is the only home we've ever known.
